Contrà Porti with Palladian and Gothic palaces, and Piazza Matteotti with Palazzo Chiericati (now the Civic Museum) and, last but not least, Palladio’s famous Teatro Olimpico, the first covered, permanent theater in the modern era.
With its Renaissance elegance and Gothic elements, the city center is both majestic and refined. Explore it with a tour guide passionate about Vicenza!
Vicenza, the City of Palladio
Vicenza has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, thanks to its splendid palaces and monuments designed in the 16th century by the great architect Andrea Palladio.
The Basilica Palladiana, The Olympic Theatre, Palazzo Chiericati, Palazzo Barbaran Da Porto (Palladio Museum) are only some of the many Palladian buildings in town. And just a few minutes from the city centre... the amaing Villa La Rotonda!
Vicenza, the City of Gold
The lively Piazza dei Signori, sitting room of the city, is where you can understand why Vicenza is also called City of Gold. The Palladian Basilica houses the Jewellery Museum and beautiful historical goldsmith shops.
Goldsmithing begun in small workshops during the XIV century. In the Middle Ages the corporation Fraglia degli Orafi collected more than 150 artisans. Over time the activity has become a prestigious industry, which today produces about a third of all Italian manufacturing.
Enjoy local food&wine
Why not enjoy a coffee or an aperitif in the main square? Among the local wines, you’ll find Vespaiolo, Torcolato di Breganze, Durello della Lessinia, and Gambellara wines.
For lunch, try the Baccalà alla Vicentina, a dish so iconic that a Baccalà Brotherhood was formed to preserve the 400-year-old recipe!
