Looking for a Tour guide of Conegliano?
As a tour guide of Conegliano, I suggest a stop in this city to people who want to know something more about the art of Venice! I’ve always loved the history of art even though my studies have brought me to focus on many other subjects.
Among the different artistic periods the Venetian Renaissance is definitely one of my favorites! Conegliano is the birthplace of Giambattista Cima, who painted a marvelous altarpiece in the Duomo.
The painter Giambattista Cima
Cima da Conegliano, and this is the way he was called in the Venetian Republic, was a great artist! We are at the beginning of the XVI century, in the dawn of the Renaissance art in Venice. He heralded the importance given to the colours. And you’ll see the Madonna’s mantel in the painting of the Cathedral, how brilliant the ultramarine blue is, thanks to the use of the lapis lazuli.
Unmissable are the landscapes in the background of his works, so meticulously painted, that is so easy many times to recognize them in the hills and in the castles all around Conegliano. The faces of the people represented are always characterized by an intense and never trivial expression. Influences by Vivarini, Bellini or Antonello da Messina? Or by Giorgione and Carpaccio?
Touring Conegliano Old Town
When we walk in the historic centre of the city, we can admire the very big frescoed facade of the Duomo, one of the biggest frescoed facades in the North of Italy. It shows biblical scenes by the Flemish painter Pozzoserrato. We can visit the Sala dei Battuti decorated by Francesco da Milano, whose Stories of Christ were inspired by Albrecht Durer. His engravings were previously published and distributed in the land of Venice.
Inevitably we’ll see the Medieval walls coming from the ancient castle, the elegant Venetian palaces, the neoclassical Teatro Accademia. And we’ll talk about typical products, first of all the Prosecco Docg, of which Conegliano is very proud! Here there is the oldest Wine-making School of Italy and from here the ancient and famous Prosecco Road starts!
