Looking for a Tour Guide of Asolo?

Asolo… is in my heart! It is the little village where I was born and grew up, and where now I live. I’m very happy to welcome you as a tour guide of Asolo and to show you its beautiful historic centre!

City of one hundred horizons

The Italian poet Giosuè Carducci defined Asolo the “city of one hundred horizons”. It is always there sparkling, in summer when the sun shines and in winter when nature would like it sleepy. A millennial history attested by the Roman remains of the theatre, of the aqueduct and of the baths.

Very interesting are the great medieval monuments, as the Castle, the Cathedral – that houses a beautiful painting by Lorenzo Lotto – and the Rocca on top of the hill, and the Venetian palaces with characteristic elements of the Renaissance.

Loved by poets and artists

Asolo is a walled and painted city, famous for its Prosecco Asolo Docg wine, the extra virgin olive oil and the flavoured honey of the hills. It is considered one of the most beautiful borghi (little villages) of Italy and, definitely, a Slow City, to be lived peacefully.During our walking tour of Asolo we asoleremo – from asolare, that means “walking around thoughtless, enjoying the beauty of life”. The English poet Robert Browning loved to do that, up and down the narrow streets and through the charming squares.

We will discover all the places loved by the many artists who wrote exciting words about the little Asolo. Where did the Venetian Queen of Cyprus Caterina Cornaro, the Italian actress Eleonora Duse and the English traveler and writer Freya Stark use to live in Asolo? Where could they admire all the horizons offered by this hidden town of Italy? Belonged to Freya Stark is her garden full of fragrant roses and with the ruins of the Roman theatre.

Strolling outside the city walls

Leaving the city walls, if we have some time, we can continue our walk along the foresti, the roads that go down to the valley. We can see up close the symbols sculpted on the facade of Casa Longobarda and the mysterious Fresco belonging to the Venetian Villa Contarini. Or the ancient Church of Saint Catherine from Alessandria once belonged to the Confraternity of the Beaten and the “Rembrandt’s Dream” by the painter Marius Pictor.

Or we can reach the Capuchin Monastery, the spiritual guardian of the cemetery nestled on the hill in front of the sacred Mount Grappa. I was born in Asolo and in my life I had the opportunity to meet many local people and enter some of the many private beautiful palaces, discovering hidden stories and secret gardens of rare beauty… as Freya Stark’s Garden. What about to know curiosities and traditions of this amazing little jewel with a local tour guide of Asolo?
