Looking for a Tour Guide of the Brion Tomb?

I love the two circles of the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. They decorate a lot of corners of the Brion cemetery, his work of art in the little town of San Vito di Altivole, Veneto, Italy.

Two circles like two curious eyes, that meet defining the sinuosity of the infinity. I think of two windows open onto the world, mirror of the soul and union of hearts, word for the mind and vehicle for intense and intricate emotions.

Brion and Brionvega

Visiting this place is a way to pay homage to the Brion spouses. They contributed in the ‘60s, thanks to their company Brionvega, to express the creativity and the innovation of the industrial Italian design. Do you know for example the Radiocubo? One of the first models is at the MoMa in New York… and one of the many later produced, of an intense orange colour, is today in my kitchen, inherited by my dear Nonna Giulia.

Exploring the Brion Tomb is also the expression of the desire to go on a journey, whose many paths are indicated by the lines of a concrete architecture, apparently cold but that comes to life when in contact with nature, and by the many symbols.

Carlo Scarpa's symbologies

Carlo Scarpa, great Venetian architect and designer of the ‘900, invites us to enter this place almost suspended in time. We can follow the orphic tunnel to reach the Pavilion of the Meditation, where we can think about the mystery of life and death.

He suggests to go closer to the Arcosolium and bow down to our dearest affections. Family love is under the Family Chapel. We finally find the strength of the community in the little Church surrounded by water. Beautiful Koi carps swim gracefully, they remember the interest of the architect in the Japanese culture.

Curiosities about Brion Tomb

Is there maybe a reason why Carlo Scarpa, who died in Japan, decided to be buried here? He chose a corner of the cemetery that he considered the No Man’s Land. Was he really buried standing? Why did the architect say that the Brion Tomb is his best work of art? How much did it cost?

Would you like to discover more about the symbols he left? What about to experience this place that attracts architects and art lovers from many parts of the world with a local tour guide of Brion Tomb?

Now the Memoriale Brion (Brion Tomb) belongs to FAI, a non-profit foundation with the aim of protecting and enhancing Italy's historical, artistic and landscape heritage.
