Looking for a Tour guide of Castelfranco Veneto?
What about a walk through the historic centre of this charming walled city with a local tour guide of Castelfranco Veneto, to have a look at the most significant places of the ancient Castrum Francum (literally, free castle)? A tour around the walls admiring the imposing brick construction and the palaces outside, with the Venetian loggia.
Impressive is the Civic Tower with the symbols of Treviso, the founding city, and of the Venetian Lion of Saint Mark. Very interesting are the Duomo, with Giorgione’s painting, and the Academic Theatre, both works of the local architect Francesco Maria Preti.
Birthplace of Giorgione
Castelfranco Veneto has always been a city with a commercial essence – even today a big street market takes place twice a week! – and with an equally important artistic vocation. It’s the birthplace of Giorgione, great artist of the Venetian Renaissance. Amazing are its use of colour and the tonalism that made Venice so innovative in the history of art between ‘400 and ‘500.
We will enter the Duomo to admire Giorgione’s altarpiece, with its gradient colours, the surreal atmosphere of the scene, the mysterious look of the people represented. Curiosities are a lot… and I would like to tell you them right here, in front of the painting of the Holy Conversation, the only one Giorgione’s work of art remained in its place of origin.
In town there is also a Frieze attributed to him and painted inside the Giorgione’s Museum, which was maybe his family house. It speaks about liberal and mechanical arts, but also about astrology and the fear of the end of the world that worried people at the end of the XV century.
Castelfranco Veneto, a lively city
The city is also an ideal place where to stop for a coffee, especially in Piazza Giorgione, where elegant shops are protected by characteristic porticoes. Sometimes you can find the local sweet, the Fregolotta, or you can eat typical dishes based on the Rose, the local variegated chicory.
I used to work here some years ago as employee at the Tourist Information Office and I had the opportunity to meet a lot of local people, discovering many historical curiosities. They gave me news about the Botanical Garden of the beautiful Villa Bolasco and about the conservatory Steffani. A pit of memories of the local tradition, important for a tour guide of Castelfranco Veneto!
